Barbara Hirsh Lember
Lember’s expressive, evocative hand-colored and black and white images include people, landscapes and still lifes. Among her children’s books are A Book of Fruit and The Shell Book, both published by Houghton Mifflin and If You Find a Rock written by Peggy Christian and illustrated by Lember, published by Harcourt Brace.
A graduate of Philadelphia’s Museum College of Art, Barbara Lember’s photographic work has been featured in a number of group and solo exhibitions, in Philadelphia and New York including The Works Gallery, Philadelphia, PA. Since 1983, her photographs have also appeared in a number of juried and invitational exhibitions, including, the Abington Art Center, Abington, PA; The Perkins Center for the Arts, Moorestown, NJ;, Art In City Hall, Philadelphia, PA; The Woodmere Art Museum, Philadelphia, PA; Yellow Springs, Chester Springs, PA; and, 80 Washington Square East Gallery, New York City. She has won numerous awards, including a Pennsylvania Council for the Arts Fellowship.
Her work is in numerous private and corporate collections. Included among these are the Vanguard Corporation, Nomura Securities International, Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and Stanford University Medical Center.
The artist has also had a successful career as a modern dance teacher and performer. A student of Martha Graham, she taught at Bryn Mawr College and performed with a number of regional dance companies, including the Terez Nelson Dance Company and Gruppe Motion Berlin. In addition to her photographic work, Barbara currently teaches Pilates and modern dance. “My years as a performer, teacher and choreographer have enhanced and enriched my photography,” Lember says. “Use of space, form, texture, energy and emotion are all components of both art forms.”
Barbara resides in Elkins Park, PA with her husband, Steven. They have two married daughters (Jessica and Amanda) and two grandchildren (Aydin and Annika).
